I didn't like 300.
After the "THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!" internet fad still ringing in my ears I watched the film. I hadn't read the book earlier but was a fan of Miller's work. I stopped 300 half way through. I found it boring.
When I heard The same director was taking up the reins on one of my favorite books I facepalmed. So went into the cinema waiting to see how they were going to butcher it.
But.....
I dug it,
I thought they did a good job. I'm really glad that they tackled pretty much all of sensitive scenes head on. I had alot of "I'd didn't they would put that in the movie".
I really think they got the characters (for the most part) pretty much down. Dr Manhattan's story was still moving. Rorschach's still chilling and disturbing. The comedian still disturbing and tragic at the same time.
My only real niggles were with the choices in music. Sure Phillip Glass for Manhattan was perfect, but using really famous well known songs to set the mood put me off a bit. I honestly thought The Owl was listening to Hendrix on his flying machines stereo at one stage. It's just always seems to jar with me when people use songs I know already and have a previous connection with in the movie. Always pulls me out of the narrative and reminds me I'm in a movie theater.
I'm telling people who haven't read the book to see the movie first, just so I can see if it raises similar questions for them.
I gave the book to a student to read. He came back after reading perplexed and told me "That's a fantastic book, I don't know how it's supposed to make me feel."
"I know isn't it great?!"
